When your SIM is barred, it usually loses:
- Outgoing calls
- SMS functionality
- Mobile data
- USSD access for banking
Incoming calls and SMS may still work for a short time. But soon, your line becomes unusable unless reactivated.
Step-by-Step: How I Recovered My Barred Airtel Line
Step 1: Confirm the Issue
Dialing any number gave me an error: “Your line has been barred due to NIN non-compliance.”
So I verified via:
- The Airtel NIN portal: https://www.airtel.com.ng/nin
- A NIMC check to confirm my NIN was active
Result: My NIN was fine—the SIM just wasn’t linked.
Step 2: Link NIN via USSD
I dialed:
*121*1#
I entered my 11-digit NIN when prompted.
Got a message:
“Your NIN has been successfully submitted. Please wait for confirmation.”
Step 3: Waited 24 Hours
Nothing changed immediately. But within 24 hours, outgoing calls worked again.
Mobile data and banking USSD (*894#, etc.) returned within another 24 hours.
Total recovery time: 48 hours—no visit required.

Pro Tips If USSD Doesn’t Work
- Use your network’s mobile app to submit your NIN. Apps sometimes bypass USSD issues.
- If your SIM is in a MiFi or modem, insert it into a phone first.
- Turn off airplane mode, restart your phone, and try again after submission.
What If You Still Can’t Recover It?
If none of the above works:
- Visit a service center with your NIN slip and valid ID
- Ask for a SIM swap or re-registration
- Tell them you already submitted your NIN but didn’t get restored

It’s not always necessary to visit the service center after being banned. If your NIN is legitimate and active, a straightforward NIN resubmission often works.
For me, getting back online only required a couple of USSD numbers and took me two days. Before you line up, try it first.
